CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP

Primary Verse: Mark 3:13-15 (NASB)

“And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons."

The Journey of a Disciple:
  • Watcher – Observing Jesus (John 1:35-39)
  • Follower – Choosing to walk after Him (Matthew 4:19-20)
  • Learner – Receiving His teaching (Matthew 11:28-29)
  • Worker – Carrying out His mission (Matthew 10:1)
  • Friend – Becoming close and trusted (John 15:15)

True discipleship requires seasons of shaping, humility, and availability.

Qualities of a Disciple:
  • Teachable & Correctable:
Jesus rebuked to shape, not shame (Proverbs 3:11-12).
Examples: Rebukes for unbelief, pride, misunderstanding, intolerance (Luke 9); Correcting Martha (Luke 10:41-42).
  • Humble & Submissive:
    Obedience is non-negotiable (Matthew 14:22; Luke 6:46).
  • Empowered by the Holy Spirit:
We receive power for witness and mission (Acts 1:8; John 20:21-22).
Like Peter, true disciples are restored after failure (Acts 4:18-20).

Discipleship Requires:
  • Community:
    Early church fellowship (Acts 2:42).
  • Commitment:
Following Jesus daily (Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 9:23; John 8:31; John 13:34-35; Acts 11:26).

Disqualifications for Discipleship:
  • Resistance to Teaching and Correction:
Pharisees, Sadducees, and those seeking handouts resisted the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51).
  • Rebellion:
Rebellion is as witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:23).

Closing:
Disciples of Jesus must be available, teachable, and humble.
The invitation remains today: Follow Him fully, be shaped by Him, and become His trusted friend.
